Infection: Don't Pass It On
 
Infection: Don't Pass It On is a VA public health campaign established through a collaboration between the Office of Public Health and Environmental Hazards, National Center for Patient Safety, Employee Education System, infectious Diseases Program Office, and VA experts in infection control.  The goal of the campaign is to involve staff, patients, and visitors in taking basic steps to preventing infection, whether occurring daily, seasonally, or occurring during infectious disease emergencies (natural or manmade).

Toolkit Manual
Information contained in the Toolkit Manual includes vaccine information, ways to improve VHA employee and volunteer vaccination rates, best strategies for increasing veteran influenza vaccination rates, tools for influenza prevention, FAQs, documentation, treatment with antiviral medications and pneumococcal vaccine information.  Flu Advisories supplement that information and are published throughout the year.

General Immunization Information
Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule United States 2007-2008 Immunization Schedule 
The ACIP approved Adult Immunization Schedule for October 2007-September 2008.
 
National Immunization Program
The National Immunization Program (NIP) is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  As a disease-prevention program, NIP provides leadership for the planning, coordination and conduct of immunization activities nationwide.

Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)   
Periodically, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) updates its recommendations on immunizations in the United States. This report is a revision of the 2002 general recommendations. It provides technical guidance about common vaccination concerns for clinicians and other health-care providers who administer vaccines.

Errata: Vol. 55, No. RR-15   
In the MMWR Recommendations and Reports, "General Recommendations on Immunization:
Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (APIC), in Table 9, the vaccine storage temperatures in Celsius were incorrect for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine; live- attenuated influenza vaccine; varicella vaccine; and herpes zoster vaccine.

Specific Immunization Information
Prevention of Herpes Zoster
Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).  These recommendations represent the first statement by the ACIP on the use of a live attenuated vaccine for the prevention of herpes zoster (i.e., shingles) and its sequelae.  This report summarizes the epidemiology of zoster and its sequelae, describes the zoster vaccine, and provides recommendations for its use among adults aged>60 years in the United States.  CE credit available.

Prevention and Control of Influenza 
The 2007 recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) include 6 principal changes or updates.  They include recommendations for children, providers, health-care administrators and information about the 2007-2008 trivalent vaccine strains.

Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices - Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine  
Recommendations for use have been published in the March 23, 2007 issue of the MMWR.

A Comprehensive Immunization Strategy to Eliminate Transmission of Hepatitis B Virus Infection in the United States  
To ensure that adults at risk for HBV infection receive hepatitis B vaccination, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has released updated guidelines for adult vaccination.  The guidelines provide setting-specific recommendations as well as new implementation strategies in support of those recommendations. The MMWR containing the updated guidelines also includes a free CDC-sponsored education activity that can be completed online or submitted by mail for CME, CEU, or CNE credit.  For more information, click here.
