Prevention and Public Health Topics

 

Heart Disease

  • The Heart Truth Professional Educational Program
    Developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) this program offers you continuing education  via an interactive, case-based format.  Modules cover a series of four patient scenarios.  Content includes risk assessment, diagnosing heart disease in women and primary and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease in women.  They are free of charge.  Credit is available for physicians and nurses.

Overweight and Obesity

  • Assessment and Management of Overweight and Obese Adult Patients
    Developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO), these two CME modules review the importance of weight management, health risks, treatment, weight loss motivations, and appropriate strategies. They are free of charge and physicians can earn 2 hours of category 1 CME credit for each course completed.

Infectious Diseases

  • Immunization: You Call the Shots
    This is a series of online courses being developed by the National Immunization Program of the CDC. The first module, Understanding the Basics: General Recommendations on Immunization, provides basic information regarding how vaccines work and general recommendations for their use. Although many of the vaccines discussed are childhood vaccines, the principles apply to adult vaccines, as well. The intended audience is nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, and other health professionals who provide immunizations.
  • General Recommendations on Immunization
    Periodically, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) updates its recommendations on immunizations in the United States. This report is a revision of the 2002 general recommendations. It provides technical guidance about common vaccination concerns for clinicians and other health-care providers who administer vaccines.  CE credit is available.
  • Prevention of Herpes Zoster
    Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).  These recommendations represent the first statement by the ACIP on the use of a live attenuated vaccine for the prevention of herpes zoster (i.e., shingles) and its sequelae.  This report summarizes the epidemiology of zoster and its sequelae, describes the zoster vaccine, and provides recommendations for its use among adults aged >60 years in the United States.  CE credit available.

  • The American Cancer Society
    The American Cancer Society's Online Continuing Medical Education site contains find free Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities on all aspects of oncology, from cancer prevention and diagnosis to treatment and palliative care.

  • CDC/UNC Public Health Grand Rounds
    Public Health Grand Rounds is a series of satellite broadcasts and webcasts presenting real-world case studies on public health issues. Its purpose is to promote a leadership-level, professional dialogue on emerging, news-breaking issues of strategic significance. It is a collaborative effort between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Partners in the program include the Association of Schools of Public Health, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the National Association of County and City Health Officials and the Public Health Training Network.  Numerous topics are available for viewing.  CEU and CME credits are not offered for this activity, but the topics and presentations are worth viewing.

Tobacco Use Cessation

 

  • Treating Tobacco Use
    The purpose of this program is to identify efficacious interventions for tobacco use that can be offered during clinical/medical visits. The course is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, technicians, and allied health professionals. It is jointly sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Medical School, the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (CTRI), and the Extension Services in Pharmacy. The University of Wisconsin Medical School designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. This program is accredited by the University of Wisconsin Office of Continuing Medical Education for 1 hour and can be used by nurses and other health professionals. It is also good for 1.0 hours (0.10 CEUs) of Pharmacy CE credit.
