Be Active Your Way VA!
VA proudly supports the US Department of Health and Human Services' 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The basic message of the guidelines (for adults) is:
For all individuals, some activity is better than none, but more is better.
For substantial health benefits, do at least 150 minutes each week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or 75 minutes each week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity.
All adults should include muscle strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups on two or more days per week.

Interest in Employee Wellness from VHA staff and leadership has been growing for the past several years across the VHA. The need to address preventable risk factors is of interest due to the high prevalence of chronic disease and the costs associated with caring for patients with chronic diseases. In particular, obesity has received much recent attention and become a top priority in VHA due to the burden of illness associated with obesity. The National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (NCP) supports and encourages the initiation and operation of employee wellness programs throughout the VHA.
On this page you will find a Start-Up Guide that describes the steps involved in establishing an employee wellness program and offers advice from seasoned Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA) wellness leaders. Other materials offer ideas and guidelines for employee wellness activities, needs assessments, presentations and other resources. New materials will be added as they become available. VA staff seeking information specific to the VA should access the NCP intranet website.
