From the Editor—You’re probably familiar with the epic migration that some North American monarch butterfly populations make each autumn to reach the distant sites where they overwinter and breed en masse. Flying at speeds no greater than 25 miles per hour, successive generations of these butterflies collectively travel up to 4,500 miles to get to and from the humid, warm ancestral habitats located in Mexico and coastal Southern California.
